Quite impressive destruction of an inland Central Asian sea:

Volume down by an order of magnitude in 2 or 3 generations.

The Yangtze diversification is too compelling to ignore or to put off.
The Yangtze Three Gorges project itself is amazing for the benefits it
will bring. Every decade it has three massive floods that kills
thousands and downs whole provinces downstream. The excess waters
from the Yangtze will be very profitably used for the Huangho. This
is a continental sized project with continental sized consequences
that cannot be predicted. One positive argument will be that its
unlikely for both the Yangtze and the Huangho drainage areas to suffer
drought in the same year.

There's a sea in the east of the former USSR (name eludes me in the morning
rush) which is basically dry after decades of abuse (including dumping
nuclear waste, which heated the water and aided evaporation. The resulting
radioactive salt plains blow about in the winds).

CIA extortion and spy recruitment? Perhaps foreign nations are getting
nervous about a CIA that has grown new fangs and talons?
Somewhat unrealistic to assume spies to be only foreigners.

Just to contribute to the drift....

The "starving peasants should just eat cake" comment that Marie
Antoinette got so much stick for, was in fact supposedly quite
reasonable. The revolting peasants were being so over a lack of
a particular type of flour used to make bread. There was no shortage
of the flour (would Americans spell that "flor"?) used to make cakes.

nope, foreign students have to pay an extra $65-per-semester fee so homeland
security can investigate them.

No, smart ass, I won't give my brain to you :)

Could you explain to me why non-citizens of the US feel that they are

When I'm in France, for example, they make it pretty clear that I'm
really not welcome there... why shouldn't we reciprocate ?:)

Indeed, I have found the French away from Paris to be
more friendly, particularly if you make an effort to speak

However, that may not be French. I rented a gite in Brittany

He was pulling votre jambe/dy goes. The Bretons HAVE to learn French,
and indeed couldn't function without it. However, like some Welsh and
Irish people (and a few Cornish now), many Bretons prefer to use their
own language, and who are translators to disagree with that? (;-).
