The Chinese scientists work for the benefit of humanity to ward off disasters.

No, they work for the power and glory of the Party. They don\'t dare do
anything else.

It\'s also a demonstration of how well they can target random objects
floating around in space. That\'s of obvious strategic value: \"We can
hit your spy and navigation satellites at any moment\".

Jeroen Belleman

They have already hit a satellite, and made a lot of debris.

It\'s sad that communist dictators like to waste enormous resources on
crazy expensive symbols of their personal power. North Koreans are
under-nourished to feed a giant army and develop missiles and nukes.
Putin is wrecking Russia and killing Ukranians. Chinese moon landings
are expensive demonstrations of, well, something.

Mao and Stalin killed millions of their own people.

The single-party communist model tends to put single psychopaths in
charge for life... or families of psychopaths for generations. Bad
social dynamics.

Don\'t be ridiculous. Scientists are driven by curiosity and maybe glory.
Monetary rewards comes behind.

Remember Werner von Braun? Maybe he had second thoughts about national
socialism, but he couldn\'t resist the temptation of developing rockets
once he had the chance.
For the power and glory of Hitler? It could have worked out that way,
but it was not von Braun\'s primary motivation.

They don\'t like themselves, or their families, going to prison.

It\'s not a technique used to motivate uniquely skilled people. If you are good enough at your job to be recruited into a team that is working on a project that is critical to national prestige, you are good enough to be able to get yourself moved to a different high prestige project if the people leading your project get foolish and dictatorial.

John Larkin doesn\'t seem to be good enough at what he does to know how that works.
