Cheap PAL programmer?

Hello from Gregg C Levine
I am looking for a cheap PAL programmer. We need to "burn" a few new PAL
chips for a board that we built for a customer about ten years previously. Back then
we supplied the logic tables, and the blank chips, and a service bureau burned those
blanks for us. However, during the time that has passed that shop has folded, and
we want to delete the middle firm, and do this ourselves.

We now understand that PALASM has become essentially public domain software,
and have downloaded the bits for the purpose of creating the code to be burned to
the chips, but that's all we have so far.

The TOP range of programmers seem good value, although I've not used one:

Alternatively, pick up a Data I/O 29B with the logicpak and 303A011A
adaptor on eBay. It will do all the older BiPolar PALs, and the GAL16V8
and PALCE range. Can be a bit hit and miss to find a good working one
witht he right revision software, but when you do, it will serve you
well - I swear by mine :)

Alternatively, if it's just a few you need, send me the Equations or
JEDs, and I'll burn them for you?

There is a free program called something like PAL-to-GAL.exe that will
convert your PAL code to a GAL that can be handled on most medium to
high end burners.

Should be available from several vendors of GALs in their download
sections...

Yes, it's from Lattice, free from their website - or email me and I'll
send you a copy.

If you want to play with interchanging, use the MUCH more useful
JED2EQN.EXE and EQN2JED.EXE from National Semi. (again, LMK if you want
them). They convert PAL and GAL .JEDs to text equations (ABEL), and back
again.

I had a similar problem with some PROMs I had to burn. The parts were
way obsolete. I had to design and build a burner just so I could burn 8
parts or so for our customer. There was no other way to do it. We ate
that one, but the customer was a big repeat, so it paid off.
