Hi,

I found these connectors in a box with old electronic stuff and radio
equipment:

Can I use these to connect two devices (a DVD player and a FM tuner) to the
same line-in of an amplifier, or are they only suitable to work the other
way round (splitting one signal into two signals)?

thanks,
Erik

The connectors just wire the similar terminals together -- all three
insides are connected and all three outsides are connected. The problem
will come about because your DVD player and FM tuner outputs are
designed to go into an input -- not to fight another output.

Usually when you want to take feed from two different audio outputs you
need to use a thing called a "mixer".

Or a switch.

Hi!

We use them at work for feeding the mono audio output of old VCRs into
Stereo amps, so the sound goes to both channels.

You can also make modern art structures by connecting many of them
together, which would probably win you a Turner prize or something :)

Yours, Mark.

Or the "Not Turner" prize!

If you try to connect two outputs to the same input, the two outputs
will try to fight each other and the one with the lowest impedance and
highest signal level will predominate. You should use a resistor in
series with each output to prevent the dominance. If they are both
earphone outputs, then use a 1k resistor. If they're line outputs, 4.7k
or more might work okay.

Thanks for all replies!

I do not intend to use my tuner and DVD player at the same time, even it if
would work it would sound weird I think. Perhaps I can find a switch or
something, as suggested, to connect everything.

greetings,
Erik

Here is a 4-way AV switch:
