Broken hard drives?

My kids enjoy disassembling hard drives, and I'm trying to amass a
collection of them to be able to have a "taking apart" class at their
school, but I can't seem to find enough dead hard drives. Anyone know
a source of dead drives? I've got 10 in the junk pile right now, but
I'd need something between 20 and 80, so I obviously don't want to pay
too much per drive...

Picking them up in Eastern Massachusetts to save on shipping might be
nice, but that might restrict availability...

Go to a local computer shop and see if they will GIVE them to you. It's
just crap they don't have to dispose of so it should be a no brainer for
them.

Certainly the Boston area should be able to get you more than you can
handle. You may also try to get ahold of disks from the IT department of a
local company, but they may be paranoid of loosing control of proprietary
information.

No, you've got it backwards ;-)

He should be able to SELL the kids' project, as a data destruction service.
Guarantee that every disk will be personally disassembled by hand (in an
environment with no working computers around, just to ensure no one gets
clever and tries to copy the disk before shredding), demagnetized, chewed on
by the classroom hamsters for good measure, and then physically destroyed.

Once you open the HDD, the data is essentially unreadable by any computer,
unless it is done in a 100% clean room. So it is a really good way of getting
rid of data.

Really?
Let me tell you a little tale...

Back in '95-'96-ish, I was reduced to computing on an old Mac II by a
lightning hit that wiped out my IIci's modem, motherboard, HD, and three
(out of four installed) SIMMs - we're talking classic "burned the traces
right off the boards and blew the tops off of chips" lightning damage.
Although it was a terrible financial loss due to my situation at the
time (A IIci was a seriously pricey box, even by Mac standards, and I
didn't have a prayer of replacing mine anytime soon) it wasn't a
particularly horrible fate, since at the time, I was more interested in
keeping my internet capability alive than doing any "power computing".
The catch: "You can have the computer, but the drive in it is dead -
It's got a bad case of stiction."

Well, having nothing to lose (The drive has already been declared dead
of stiction by professionals, so how can I "kill" it any worse?), I
popped the top off it to see what was inside, and maybe try to fix it.
Figured out real quick that if I plugged it in (still without lid) and
powered up the machine, I could "break loose" the stiction by manually
turning the spindle, and after that the drive would work just fine until
it was powered down and left idle for more than a minute or two.
Powering it back up required "manual cranking" to get it going again.
Once I established that, it was a simple "let's see what happens if
I..." concept to try booting the machine from what you're surely calling
an "essentially unreadable by any computer" drive. Guess what? Not only
did the drive boot the machine, but the data on it was 100% intact,
including several legal motions apparently from various divorce and
personal injury cases, a sizable list of names, addresses, billing info,
and other sensitive information left on the drive when what I presume
was the law firm that owned it previouly declared it a lost cause and
told the shop to keep it.

I ran like that for nearly 4 months while saving my pennies for a new
drive and/or computer, all the while expecting some sort of malfunction.
The machine and drive sat in my bedroom - not a "clean room" by any
stretch of the imagination, since I'm a smoker, and at the time was a
construction worker, tracking in and flinging around god-only-knows what
kind of dust and crud every day when I got home from work and changed
clothes - and worked just fine. Never a hint of any trouble whatsoever
beyond the stiction that required manual assistance to spin the drive up
from a cold start.

The day I installed the new drive, I was able to copy off everything
that I cared about from the old drive to the new one. I continued to use
the old drive as a scratch monkey for months after that. I don't
remember what caused me to actually give the thing a final "retirement"
in the end - maybe I stumbled onto a bigger drive? Or was that when I
got the Performa? I just plain don't remember. Whatever the reason, that
drive was still functional when it was finally taken out of service for
the last time - after having been operated with no lid, in the bedroom
of a dusty, grubby smoker, for the better part of a year.

So... Having heard (Well, OK - read) my tale, are you still quite
convinced that opening a drive is "a really good way of getting rid of
data", or renders it "essentially unreadable by any computer"?

I know for sure that *I'M* not.

This is way back in the computer stone age, before the (commercial)
introduction of GMR technology. Data dentity then was only a fraction of
what it is now.

Today even nicotine particles will kill data on your disk, although only
locally. It will not wipe your disk instantly, and reading the disk will not
be impossible.

Not true at all. I have on several occasions opened up drives - modern
drives too, not old ST412/506/ESDI monsters - and unstuck frozen
spindle bearings by turning the platters manually. The drive has
certainly worked long enough to recover all data.

I knew a guy who rebuilt old Seagate ST-251 40 meg HDs in his garage,
including replacing the platters and reformatting them with an
exerciser - all in his garage!

I used to unstick the old Seagate ST-251 HDs by jerking them smartly in
a circle, using the inertia of the platters to do the unsticking. It's
too much trouble to open the drive up. Usually some very quick movement
is enough to do the trick.

There's Maxtor in Shrewsbury - give them a try. I'm sure they got a ton
of dead drives they toss all the time.

You won't get much joy with this technique on a 2.5" laptop HDD with
glass platters, though :)

That's easy enough to overcome. Just use a bigger hammer. ;-)

Not very dependable. You really want to get rid of data:

#1 and #2 should suffice for commercially sensitive data,
add #3 and #4 for Top Secret pentagon files (like those
HDs you got from Los Alamos)

1) Get 250W solder GUN (not iron) and replace heating
element with coat hanger (strip paint at ends) to make
a large degaussing coil
2) after degaussing drive by passing through degaussing
coil (WITH power on, hold the trigger down)
then use steel wool to "scrub" surfaces of platters


3) 10# sledgehammer for Grand Finale!

#4) For true overkill, you can then roast the remains of the
platters (NOT the rest of the drive) in a bonfire.

The use of thermonuclear devices and/or quantum black holes
is reserved for the truly paranoid.

Our government clients used to use a specialized shredder-type
appliance to pulverize the platters. The remains were then melted.
 
Something else that's fun to do with hard drives is to recover the Neodymium
magnets thay use in the platter assembly. They are fun to play with and
pretty strong for their size!
