Best "geek" show on TV

Hi,

if you have never watched the SBS-TV show called " Mythbusters" then
you do not know what you are missing. Tonight's episode, featuring
exploding breast implants and CDs turning into shrapnel at high rpms, was a
classic.

The two principals *are* I admit, Yanks, but nevertheless seem like
normal, likable human beings.

Lots of low tech, "see what it takes to makes it bust" stuff.

A really entertaining hoot.

True a fun show. But if the youngun's are watching be warned they seem to
duck into the local adult store to get latex from time to time. You might
have to answer a few embarrassing questions. But hey that's SBS...

**The best episode was the one where they proved that eating poppy seed cake
can send one of those heroin testers in the positive region. I kinda liked
the lawn chair/weather balloon episode too.

I can almost see certain people manufacturing gelatine ladies for themselves
to replicate the first experiment.

Oh-oh! Was that asking for it?

** Well, a normal CD was pretty much OK to about 25,000 rpms - ie more
than 52 times speed. Damaged ones were another matter, a CD damaged by
exposure to microwave oven was the worst case. In all cases the CD rom
housing was sufficient to contain the resulting shrapnel.

But, you just had to see for yourself what these two Yank dudes got up to
in order to DESTROY an innocent CD to appreciate the pure "geek"
entertainment value !!!

The microwaved CDs broke up first, however, the results may very well be skewed.

Keep in mind, CDROM drive motors have limited power. During their tests,
some disks started to warp, but still not break. There is no way that a ROM
drive motor will have enough power to spin a disk in that manner, and deform
the disk like that.

Also, they did not use standard disk mounting techniques. Normally, the disk
is placed in a guide, and a magnetic cap holds the disk in place. It can still
quite easily lift. The disk needs to be balanced to hold itself within the
guide, the magnetic cap is not really load bearing, it is there to merely hold
the disk in place.

Their tests were done with a mains powered router motor, with the disks
bolted to the shaft.

During their test jig building, they were having trouble with motors not
spinning fast enough. The drive technique they settled on is direct drive
(disk directly mounted onto the shaft), and they used a table router motor- the
largest and fastest motor they had on hand.

The fastest direct drive motor was actually a hand-held engraving style tool
(like a dremel tool). However, under load, it wouldn't get anywhere near the
30000 rpm target speed they wanted.

What _was_ interesting though, was the results of the flying pieces embedding
themselves in the gelatin dummy. At 20,000+ RPM, those bits really would dig
deep into human flesh.

** Ahh - but then the super cool dudes had a brainwave.

What 120 volts fails to do - 240 volts CAN DO !!!

With appropriate safety and brevity - the dirty deed was done in style
!!!!!!

Just watched it for the first time tonight and I'm hooked. True geek
stuff indeed. Highly recommended.

Phil,

Do you know if SBS have broadcast the one where the Mythbusters
placed JATO rockets on the top of the Chevy yet? If you saw it,
what were the results?

The ice bullet investigation was interesting last week.

**They couldn't buy JATOs, but they used rockets with equivalent thrust
capacity. They managed to get the vehicle up to around 140MPH, not 300MPH as
claimed in the myth.

Don't know if it has been on SBS yet but saw this one on Foxtel- The one
where they tried to waterski behind a rowing 8 from a uni. I liked the
woman university expert blabbering on about how this myth is perpetuated by
rowing teams to boast about how strong they are etc, (she was smuggly
certain of failure) then they tried the skiing. I won't spoil the ending,
but the outcome was surprising to me and a real good show.

Possibly, but given the sense of humour, I suspect they are Canadians. (that's a compliment)

The thing I liked was that they made the car remote control and drove it
from a helicopter flying overhead. Apparently they were a bit worried
the myth might be true and the driver may end up dead.
P.S. These guys have too many resources and too much time. What a life!

From the look and style, it looks like Myth Busters could have evolved
from the Red Green show (in which they feature projects such as
turning a hot-water cylinder into a do-it-yourself submarine).

I do hope Myth Busters stays around for a while. It's become my
favourite show. But it looks like it may only be a summer fill-in, at
least on SBS-TV in Australia.

Discovery channel on PayTV.

Endless re-runs of similar stuff.

Been watching that for months on Foxtel, it's into re-runs now. I think
SBS and Foxtel are only a single episode apart at the moment.

One unusual thing about the version shown on SBS is that they have
redone the voiceovers. The original version has an american announcer
(as you would expect) but for some reason SBS have decided that
replacing him with an aussie guy is of some benefit. Having seen the
original I feel this whimpy aussie voice (doesn't sound like an
announcer) kind of ruins it.

BTW, monday nights on Foxtel Discovery rock!

10:30pm Mythbusters
11:30pm Monster Garage
(Weird and wonderful projects with no real purpose other than "it's
cool." For example, turning a stock car into a lawnmower, or a VW into
a jetboat, or getting an ambulance to do wheelies...)
12:30am Junkyard Mega Wars
(Two teams face a different challenge each week; their machines are
constructed from salvaged junk yard parts only)
