Given the panic level and possibility of a 1918-level pandemic,
I wonder why human trials were not begun early on every known or
suspected anti-viral.

A human test subject would probably feel worse after you fed them every
known-or-suspected anti-viral.

In seriousness though there are thousands of known-or-suspected
anti-virals they seem to be having organizing coherent trials of a
couple of them.

They're not going to get research funding for observations they can't explain. The Australians couldn't explain it. The Chinese, who are also looking at this drug, were able to explain the molecular basis for it. They might be moving into animal studies, dunno. It's serious enough the FDA is warning people off it until we know more. People will be drinking hair tonic next.

There're are plenty of antivirals out there. Unfortunately many of them are antihuman too.

Ivermectin has been around for decades and its efficacy against
internal and external parasites in both humans and animals is
well established. It's cheap and about as safe as any common drug
could be.

If those scientists had been testing it in vitro against COVID-19
ever since the pandemic started, I wonder why it has taken them
this long to publish the results.

Don't hold your breath. The traditional medicine stuff rarely to never pans out. Yerba Santa is a weak expectorant.

What's the point of exploring anything that is already explained?

Do we already know everything that can be known, like we did in 1900?

"in cell culture"

Bleach will do that. Wait until it is shown to work in humans, then let us know.

Ethics is one reason. The other is economics; that would be a panic response, and
a flurry of unusable data does no one any good. Test this, if you will, by
taking regular doses of California raisins, and report your results. Maybe you
can even get 'big ag' to sponsor the effort!

Several months ago.. (my early prepper period.)
I bought some Zinc tablets.. not to take every day,
but if you feel the 'scratchy throat' coming on.
(no idea if that is a sign of current virus...)
I have no idea if zinc works or not... but no drug
company is going to pay for trails.

Oh and it's got a metallic taste in the back of your mouth
so even if it doesn't work, the placebo effect may be enough.

I think they've tried about everything they've got, and
discovered some interesting new interactions that tend to kill patients along the way.

eg. ritonavir/lopinavir:

Combined use with amiodarone (fatal arrhythmia), quetiapine(severe coma), simvastati (rhabdomyolysis) is prohibited

In vitro, anyway.
100% of cancers in mice can be cured.

They can't publish results they don't have.

12 days later they have results.

Certainly they could start with drugs at doses that are in use for
other things and known to be reasonably safe and possibly anti-viral.
Carefully risking a few lives might save many.

You mean like Linus Pauling? What are you talking about???

Besides, what Larkin is talking about is exactly what they do. But "carefully" means something different to Larkin than the scientific community. To Larkin it means, why wasn't it done yesterday?

Why is Larkin always in such agitation over every issue in the world? He seems to think everyone else is an idiot and he alone knows the one true faith.

Yes. People used to do the math differently, based on the moral
concept that we should do what probabilistically saves the most lives.

We also felt that some people should be allowed to volunteer for the
benefit of all. Spock said something like that.

I have volunteered for an inconvenient but not very dangerous
long-term medical study. I did get cool pictures of my brain.

There are easy ways to spend a little money and save millions of lives
every year.
