If I realy knew I would not have asked. I know Pillips to be an existing
company and that Philips did not use it's own brand name in the states as it
looked like too much like Phillips. I also know that Philips made a lot of
other things but electronics in the past including metalware and lavatory
gear. So I thought it to be unlikely but possible that a Phillips also makes
and/or sells CFLs in your part of the world. Besides, I have no reason to
mention another ones language errors. Not being a natural speaker my English
is not perfect at all.

The only reference to a "Philips" company in the USA I can find is to "
Phillips Screw Company" - makers of the Phillips screwdriver.

The only consumer electronics company in the USA that might have been
confused with Philips is Philco.

Metalware and lavatory manufacture ? Does this imply that they
manufacture(d) Urinals. ?

I know of the Philips - Phillips case in the states from the time I worked
for Philips. That has been over ten years by now. I also know about the
Phillips screwdrivers and assumed they were made by the US Phillips but did
not investigate other activities of that Phillips - if any. But as Philips
had - at the time - a lot of other activities but electronics, Phillips
might do other activities but screws.

As for that other Philips activities, they were mentioned at the time I
started to work for Philips and I still remember the Philips brand on the
downside of toilet seats for instance. Philips sold most or even all of that
business to concentrate on lighting and consumer electronics but as I left
Philips I'm not aware of details.

Philips certainly did manufacture and sell toilet seats, at least in
the Netherlands. I recollect using the toilet in an older house there
and seeing the Philips shield moulded into the underneath of the lid.

They had plastic moulding factories to produce cabinets and components
for their electronic equipment, its not surprising they also produced
other items.

Philips certainly did manufacture and sell toilet seats,
<snip>

As I recall there was one in the UK that made bicycle seats and saddlebags,
but I can't remember if it was one 'l' or two.

There was a British bicycle manufacturer called Phillips, two 'll's.

It's quite likely they used and/or marketed accessories with their
brand on them.

Apparently their accessories were more memorable than their cycles.

I'm sure you meant to type "errors" rather than "error" Chris. :))

As a side note......fitted a 18W Mirabella to my Maglamp, there were no
Philips lamps on the shelf at the supermarket. On initial power up less than
20% of the spiral is illuminated, it takes around 5 minutes to get up to
full speed.

I have an old Philips 15W unit with a rounded cubical base and four
straight parallel tubes coming out that join at the ends to form the
ionisation path. It's been running fine in the dunny for more than 15
years. It was one of the first CFL's and pretty pricy at the time,
maybe it had suitable specced components.

** That sounds like a magnetic ballast fluoro lamp with replaceable compact
tube.

Not the same thing at all as the **electronic ballast** 240 volt CFLs that
we are all being forced to use these days.

It's been running fine in the dunny for more than 15 years.

** An outdoor dunny light gets used maybe 25 minutes a day - would have
clocked up only 2000 - 3000 hours in 15 years.

Magnetic ballasts go on for ever and the tubes are of quite different and
much longer life design compared to electronic ballast BC and ES type CFLs.

No comparison exists.

total length is 20cm.

Phil, like I give a crap about what you think about CFL's. It exists,
it's quite old, it was very expensive at the time and dates from the
mid 90's as that's about the time I went to Uni, which, I might add,
I successfully completed, unlike other failed maths students whose
name begins with P and ends in N, I could mention.
