Putting a bit more light on it before snapping it would have been

I don't know (though looking at the cheezy technique on the schematic
--as mentioned by Black,
I shouldn't be surprised by the poor workmanship).
An acid brush with bristles trimmed to ~3/16"
and some alcohol and elbow grease does the trick.
