That's because it's an ancient transistor.

If you need this to build some circuit found somewhere, make sure the
rest of the parts are available.

I need this to repair some old welding device... It's about 10 years old...

That JEDEC part number is at least 30 years old, maybe 40 years old.

Easily 40.

It's still in production and not hard to find.

See findchips.com for some sources... since Newark has it, you should be
able to get it from Farnell in Europe.
This is the info I have on it:

2N1711 Si NPN 50V 3W 1A 70MHz, GP Amp, TO-39

It shouldn't be too hard to find a substitute, such as a 2N2219A
or 2N3053.

They have lower voltage ratings.

What about 2N3019. This one should be OK.
I've not met that one before. Looks promising. May not be any easier to source of
course !

For Ante:

be aware that they may have been removed to gain access to the
heatsink they had. This would have been required if they were
dissipating any higher amount of power. The heatsink may have
been a finned 'hat' or a large hollow bolt with a threaded part to
attach to an external h/s plate.
