Zenith SJ7775GB - please help

I recently picked up a Zenith SJ7775GB television set. The on-screen
menus and sound work just fine, but behind the menus stays black. I
tried hooking up a VCR, and then a Playstation, to the AV plugs
labelled "VCR/AUX IN," but neither produced any video. I changed the
settings to CATV and ran a channel search, but it didn't find any
channels. However, when I went to the "FAV. CHANNEL" screen and
manually selected cable channels I could listen to whatever channel I
want... but still not see them. I've already checked all of the
picture settings in the menu, and accessed the service menus to change
the brightness setting... Does anyone have an idea of what could be
wrong? Thanks for your help.

Not enough information on the tv set. Chassis number. At a minimum a year
of manufacture would help. Model numbers are a dime a dozen and require
cross reference guides. If you want free help, do provide as much
information as possible as most people won't waste time looking up that
information for free.

Hi,

If it was a older TV (older than 7yr), and paid not too much, it is
best to dump it unless it was given to you with excellent picture.

I also have exact same problem as yours on one 27" zenith, it is old
set and waiting for schematic to locate fault. CRT was still good
even it was 1988 set!

Take it to shop who is very familiar with zenith stuff and have a
estimate done.

New decent JVC 27" or RCA 27" is about 300 new with warranty and
should give good life and has loads of inputs that old Z don't have.

Cheers,

Wizard

These sets have a high incidence of defective picture tubes. Also the
picture tubes, when they fail damage other components in the video
processing circuit including he output and driver transistors. This set is
module serviceable if you care to go that far with it. IMHO I'd probably
resolve it to the parts bin and get a working tele, cut my losses. Having no
active video from either the tuner or AVIO would point to possible failure
in one or more supply voltages. Get a schematic and have at it if you want.
