Zenith Remote Causes channels to surf

Hello,

I have an older Zenith TV, and all of a sudden the TV doesn't like the
remote signal. As an example, I press the channel up button about 5
times, and then it starts to change the channels chronologically
upwards until I walk up to the TV and press the up or down arrow.
Same thing happens with the volume controls. I have to hit the
buttons many times before the TV recognizes the signal, and then it
does these weird things. Please help!

Take this as a WAG.

The (limited) computer in the TV has a small amount of
memory that stores info from the remote in a stack, in a
FIFO fashion. That info is then processed on the next
appropriate cycle by the CPU.

Something is keeping the CPU VERY busy, keeping it from
pulling off of the stack in a timely manner, so the commands
just pile up. (There's probably a finite limit of somewhere
from 8-256 commands that will be stored in the stack).

As to what's stalling the CPU, best guess is either a stuck
button (remote or TV), external IR that's confusing the shit
out of it, or a processor section that's about to die.

Thanks very much for the reply...to add something, I used the remote
from my dad's TV, which is also a Zenith, and the TV reated the same
way. When I press the buttons on the TV, it works perfectly. Does
this raise any more questions or clarify the source of the problem
any?

Thanks.

Since you don't seem to have neither the service data (schematics) nor the
ability to trouble-shoot without them...assuming you can use a soldering iron:

Try disassembling everything. Clean dust and insects from the IR receiver's
internal parts. Re-seat all connectors. Re-solder all the joints on the pcbs,
connectors, and hard-wired interconnects. Especially around all the large ICs,
be careful about introducing solder bridges...and overheating.
