XL needs to open schematic for Edit to extract connectivity

I am using Cadence Virtuoso XL (5.10). When I open the layout XL tool
and then go to the menu

Connectivity~>Update~>Components And Nets

it is unable and comes back with a popup. "This operation requires
cellview 'Top_level schematic" to be extracted, but this cannot be
done because the cellview is read-only. I was wondering why this
occurs and how to resolve it? If I checkout this schematic and go
into Edit mode, then I can extract it just fine, and use VirtuosoXL.
But after I cancel checkout, then I get the same problem. I am
confused why I should even need to check out the schematic. Why not
just do an update and refresh, and then be good to go.

Because somebody saved the schematic without doing a "check" first (i.e. they
did save rather than check-and-save). The connectivity is extracted in a
schematic during a check operation. Without that, it can't be netlisted, and
can't reliably be used as a connectivity source for Virtuoso XL.

You'd have the same problem if you tried to netlist it for simulation.

If you cancel the checkout, you're back to square one. If you've done the check
(extract) operation, and then check it in, you should then be OK.

Andrew.

Andrew, you provide so much excellent and timely information to the
community free of charge for a long time, it's awesome and very much
appreciated. Thanks so much :)

We are having that problem here too. Unfortunately we are using DM
software which locks permissions of the schematics to design group and
layouts to the layout group. Cliosoft, our DM software, is supposed to
have a solution for this, force check/save before checkin, in the
latest release but we haven't installed it yet.
