Xilinx Series 7 device availability

I thought that the Series 7 devices would be available in Q1 2011 but have
recently heard they'll be badly delayed until at least Q3. Does anyone else
have any information as to when I'll be able to actually buy these parts?

Thanks.

I think you should forget about the 7 devices for the moment, after all th
Spartan/Virtex 6 devices are only just becoming available.

I was told that limited production would be available starting Q2 '11,
meaning probably only one of each of families. I don't think full
production will be until 2012, which isn't too far off what you've
heard.

Thanks for the feedback. It's certainly depressing given all the hype
surrounding Series 7. It sounds to me like they've had some problems with
the design or manufacture.

It sounds to me like this is par for the course.

Is there anyone from Xilinx who can put the record straight on this subject
for us all please?

Roger, FPGA companies always announce new releases a few years before yo
will be able to get hold of the devices. As I said before the 6 serie
devices are only just becoming widely available so that should tell yo
that you aint going to get hold of the 7 series for a long time yet!

Point taken. I'm aware of the "vapourware" problem but just wanted an
official timescale of availability rather than us poor old customers having
to guess.

You won't get the "official" timescale here. One of the reasons for
early announcement
is to gauge the interest in new products. So Xilinx wants you to
contact your local
sales rep and tell them about yourself and why you want virtex 7
parts. Those reps
will come visit you with a laptop full of powerpoint slides showing
the upcoming
parts as a nebulous blob on a timescale vaguely marked in "quarters".
You still
won't know when you will get your hands on one, but Xilinx will know
you're interested.

Where I work, we don't design with any parts until we have verified
that we can get
them by actually placing an order for sample quantities.

Gabor

Gabor,

Thanks, that was a very interesting take on how Xilinx work.
