I am interested in buying one but I need a store in Brisbane so I can listen
to it. Heard the 28, but would like to hear the 18 because it is
significantly cheaper.

Thanks.

**Are you insane?

Bose, at a massive discount, is still double the price of any legitimate
competitor. Bose is never available at a 'real' discount price. Bose is
rarely able to be compared fairly with any competitors product. I serviced
one of the Bose control units last month. Wanna guess how it was held
together?

Allen bolts? Nope.
Philips head screws? Nope.
Torx screws? Nope.
Some kind of proprietary screws? Nope.
A sophisticated clip system? Nope.

A: Double sided tape. Yep. Double sided tape. Welcome to the wonderful world
of Bose. Ever wondered why Bose is the largest privately owned company in
the hi fi biz? Ever wondered why Dr Bose is, by far, the wealthiest
individual in the hi fi biz?

As my old dad used to say: "Buy low and sell high."

Bose use the cheapest materials and construction, the cheapest (Mexican)
labour and then sell at the highest possible price. For a long time, they
didn't even have a compatible surround sound system. Theirs was some kind of
Bose mish-mash, which didn't work with any of the mainstream systems. It
seems Dr Bose did not want to pay the licensing costs. I guess that would
have cost all of a couple of Bucks per unit.

This product:

http://www.dvdupgrades.com.au/parts.asp?index=Home+Theater+Speaker+Package

Sounds very close to the Bose (but with better bass) system.

You could connect it to:

http://www.dvdupgrades.com.au/parts.asp?index=DVD+Player

For an excellent system.

Alternatively, Sony, Pioneer, JVC and others, all have systems which easily
beat the massively over-priced Bose system. They sound better, look better
and are built like proper electronic products.

Trever,

If You can find me a system that looks and sounds like the Bose then you
have me sold.

In the mean time, Bose offers exactly what I want. It is small and compact,
its sounds good (to me) and its going to fit perfectly into the room where I
want it too.

AS for reliability, well its the same shit no matter what you buy. I know a
couple of people that have these systems and they have never had any
problems at all.

Have you tried the Bose Store in Fortitude Valley? I remember when they were
setting up something about having all the products on show there, all set up
so you can listen and compare them.

Take in your own cd's :) I did to a different store (not BOSE) but ended up
buying a Bose unit for myself.

You can haggle the price at the Bose Store, they work on commission so a
sale is a sale :)

Trever,

If You can find me a system that looks and sounds like the Bose then you
have me sold.
**I already did. Here's a few more:

http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/av/index.html

http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/av/index.html

http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/av/index.html

http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/av/index.html

http://www.sony.com.au/content.asp?go=products.asp (Too many for me to list.
The cheapest one should nail any Bose. Easy)

http://www.jvc-australia.com/products/_products_sub_group.asp?CatID=5 (Take
your choice. There's lots to choose from in this lot)

That'll do you. Look and listen to some of the above systems, then try to
justify a Bose.

In the mean time, Bose offers exactly what I want. It is small and
compact,
its sounds good (to me) and its going to fit perfectly into the room where
I
want it too.
**I'm pretty certain at least one of the above systems will do so, as well.
In fact, the Sonken system uses almost identical speakers, but with a proper
subwoofer. Total cost is less than a grand.

AS for reliability, well its the same shit no matter what you buy. I know
a
couple of people that have these systems and they have never had any
problems at all.
**I did not say that Bose was any less reliable than any other cheap system.
What they are is bloody hard to service, due to their cheap, crappy
construction. About the only thing going for them, is their artificially
high price, which ensures that owners will want them serviced when they do
go belly up.

Thanks for that, I had no idea they had a store in FV. I will go and have a
look.

I have a nice LG lifestyle system. Small speakers, sounds good. Unfortuantly
it looks like a DVD player and is a tad on the large size. What I am chasing
is something with the same footprint as the Bose. I guess they get the small
size because they include the power amps in the Sub box. Does any other
company do this? It also looks the piece sitting on top of the unit where it
is going. I guess I am chasing the look more than anything. Sad I know, but
argue with my wife (now the truth comes out!!) and you will lose!!

I'll see if I can find the Sonken system on the www, but a link would be
nice if you have one!

**Sure. I know that Sonken do, but I imagine others do, as well. The Sony
unit is very tiny, because it uses a SMPS and Tripath amplifiers. It's about
the same size as the Bose, but delivers more power and sounds better. I have
one on the bench right now (beer spilt inside). It is nicely made and
reasonable to service. And MUCH cheaper than the Bose.

It also looks the piece sitting on top of the unit where it

**I already provided you with a link to the Sonken. I'll do it again, but
pay closer attention next time.
