would a magnetic field affect a infrared receiver ?

Hi
Built another computer for a mp3 player, and it was working fine by
remote until I moved the infrared receiver (serial port model) close to
a speaker. now the program is running at up to 200% CPU usage as it's
display says anyhow. This makes the songs stutter etc. But when I
disconnect the receiver it plays fine. plugged in another receiver and
it was working fine until I moved that one near the speaker as well
(only shitty little powered speakers for a PC) ... got me beat. So would
a magnetic field affect these receivers?.

PC is only running DOS. Speaker was sitting on top of open PC case on
framework.

Thought some of you Electronic type ppl's might have a answer.

That's pretty cool - your CPU appears to now be twice as powerful as it
used to be!

I've seen enough strange things to avoid dismissing anything out of
hand, but it does seem unlikely to me. Have you tried unplugging the
speakers (not only from the computer, but also from the mains power?),
but leaving them in the same location?

I'd also try turning off *all* the lights in the room (and adjacent
rooms, if lights there illuminate the room the equipment is in) and see
if that fixes the problem. Do it at night, too - it'll only take a
minute or two to see if the problem goes away.

would be cool if it actually ran that fast, but just shows the program
is using all cpu time and is actually slowing down, usually the program
uses about 10-20% usage.

Thanks peter, funny thing is I tried it today and it's working fine
again .... go figure
then it started again, but fixed itself on a reboot, so it's obviouslly
a software problem, but I can't get it to do it again now, so i'll
ignore the problem. Thanks anyway

Dee,

We get lots of problems with compact fluro lights interfering with Infrared
recievers. We have an infrared extender that re-broadcasts the remote
control across the house to the satellite reciever box. Works very well
until we turn on the main living room light, which has 3 compact fluro
lights (those ones that replace a bayonet-type incandescant globe). After
the light has been operating for a while, it seems to settle down. However,
the first hour or so after turning the light on, the infra-red extender unit
goes ballistic (It has an activity LED on the front).
Same prob in my office; the compact fluro interferes with the remote control
for the aircon unit. I have to turn the light off, and then operate the
remote for the aircon....
Of course, I could just put normal bulbs back in...

Short answer is that I wouldnt be suprised if something like a compact fluro
is causing your probs...

Cheers,

That would not be related to a magnetic field, but more than likely
due to some Instaferances from your puter speaker. Try some of those
little ferrites on you speaker cables. You speaker wire is acting like
an antenna and is radiating nasty radio waves.

BTW, your PC mobo pums out nasty square waves, so if your puter is
beeping and stuff, you will get even more nasty harmonics than before.

You may also want to look at your IR reciever design and drivers. If
that little amount of noise causes you CPU to run OT, then you have
both poorly designed hardware and a real shitty programmer.

Bye for now

Hi Rod,
are the fluro's causing you headaches all the same brand? I use CF's
exclusively and dont have and have never had any IR remote problems.

Wayne,

They probably are. Longreach doesnt spring for multiple brands of much out
of the ordinary...unless you're looking for lice treatments for sheep...

To be honest, I hadnt thought of trying a different brand. I just thought
the probs were simply one of the annoyances you put up with if you want to
save energy!

Something to look for on the next trip down south. What brand(s) do you
use?
