I REVIEWED THE JET ALUMINUM GATEJet JW1142 4-Inch Aluminum Blastgate AND RECOMMEND THE PLASTIC GATE INTEADWoodstock International G1843 4" Plastic Blast GateWHILE I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS APPLIES TO A SHOP THAT PRODUCES "WOOD DUST" ONLY, MY SHOP PRODUCES METAL-SHAVINGS AND GLASS-BEAD DUST WHICH CAUSES THE ALUMINUM GATES TO JAM.I HAVE A HARD TIME MANIPULATING THE ALUMINUM GATES, WHERE AS THE PLASTIC GATES HAVE GIVEN ME RELIABLE SERVICE AND OPEN AND CLOSE SMOOTHLY.
Woodstock International G1571 4" Aluminum Blast GateI've had a 3 HP dust collection system in my home shop, with about 10 blast gates, since the early 1980's. Perhaps my experience with three types of 4" blast gates will help you decide which type to buy:Woodstock International W1007 ABS Plastic Blast GateCons: others have reported that the plastic has broken, although none of mine have; it's common for the plastic gate halves to eventually come unglued requiring pop-rivet or machine screw repair, or gate replacement; some users report occasional clogging, (especially if the gate handle faces downward) and they can't be disassembled to clean; the short male pipe ends are tapered and smooth, so a clamped plastic hose can slip off unless you screw the clamp to the gate; no easy way to attach gate to wall or bench.Pros: least expensive of the three gate types; gate will generally stay open or closed on it's own; once you pop-rivet the gate halves together.Woodstock International G1571 Aluminum Blast GateCons: Cost is double the plastic blast gates; gate may rattle (add a lock washer to hold it tight) and has to be loosened/tightened each time it's used, otherwise it wil
l slide open & closed on its own depending on position; takes a bit longer to open/close due to thumb-screw; male pipe ends are too short for a quick-disconnect fitting; mine leak a little more than the other types.Pros: Sturdy & well made; easy to replace the short machine screws holding the halves together with longer screws, and then secure the gate to a wall or bench; aluminum sufficiently thick to drill/tap, for securing to duct-work with machine screws; can disassemble for cleaning.Woodcraft Steel Blast Gate (see customer image)Cons: Cost is triple the plastic blast gates; no easy way to attach gate to a wall or bench; can't disassemble for cleaning, as it's riveted together - but can use compressed air to clean the tiny slit the gate pivots in (I've never had ANY gate of any type clog), while it's still connected to your dust system; painted product could rust if used in a damp work-shop.Pros: sturdy & well made; leaks less air than the other gate types; more durable than ABS units; "knife" plate (the gate) pivots, rather than slides, for a positive shut-off; friction holds the gate in the open or closed position, so it's faster to use than aluminum gates with thei
r thumb-screw; male pipe ends project 2" and are only tapered for 1/4", to ease slipping into duct or plastic hose; a clamped hose stays on male pipe end without being screwed in place as is sometimes necessary with plastic gates.Summary:Aluminum blast gates, in spite of needing to use the thumb-screw and having short pipe connectors, are better than the ABS plastic models. However, my current favorite, until someone invents a better product, is the Woodcraft (dot com) Steel blast gate. But, since they all work, it really depends on which pros/cons are important to you and how much you want to spend, as to which type to get.
Good price, reasonable shipping, shipped right away. Short couplings mean you really need to tighten the hose clamp. Installed them with rivets and calking to 4" S&D piping (S&D piping is about 1/16" bigger inner diameter then the outside of the blastgate couplings).Grizzly is a great compny, responsive customer service. Will continue to do business with them. Nobody should expect any company to allow dozens of consumers to take advantage of them because of a price misprint. Get over it already.
I have about 6 of these in my shop attached to permanent ductwork that goes to each of my stationary tools. What I like about them is that the design allows them to be securely mounted to the bench or wall. The assembly consists of 2 cast aluminum plates that are bolted together like a sandwich around the sliding gate. The bolts are standard 10-24, and can be replaced with longer bolts that can be used to bolt the whole assembly to something solid. I also like that the aluminum is thick enough that you can drill a hole in it, and drive a self tapping machine screw into it for a secure connection. I used this technique for securing the ductwork to the gate...the gate can slide shut, and that a lock nut solves the problem. These gates still leak a little, which is why I do not give them 5 stars, but in my opinion, they're far better than the plastic ones.
Basically this really is a good product. However there are a couple of things you might be interested to know about it. Firstly, the aluminum "case" which holds the gate does not supply a friction hold on the gate, if you position the device as it is shown in the above picture and open the gate, it will slam down of its own accord. The Gate screw lock which you might want to tighten a little bit to give some tension here to hold the gate open however, has too coarse a thread and often will turn back just enough to lose its grip, this in just a few operations of the gate. I suggest you remove the screw and install a locking nut on it and reinstall the screw to cure this problem. Secondly I wish there were a little more length to the 4 inch extrusions on either side to allow for a quick disconnect for the hose. As it is you must use a hose clamp here or the hose will fall off the end. These complaints aside the device is beefy and should hold up.
