Wireless passive speaker. Possible?...

Motorcycling is noisy business (wind, not exhaust), so I need to wear
earplugs under the helmet.

I have a Bluetooth based comms system in the helmet. When I crank it
up maximum volume, it is almost loud enough, at least at low speeds.

I can buy reusable earplugs with speakers in them, but I can only find
wired ones.

The space available is limited. The device can not protrude from the
ear, as it would interfere with the helmet. The outer ear cavity could
be used, though.

I am thinking it might be possible to make a reusable earplug with the
speaker in the ear canal and a coil (or other energy receiver) in the
outer ear, and then replace the speakers in the helmet with another
coil or other transducer. Is it as simple as a coil on each side?

The distance is small, and the amount of power required is also small.

Ideas?

You can get bluetooth ear buds that make a decent seal.

I don\'t think you will have much success at audio frequencies.

There are inexpensive materials available to mold small earbuds into a
custom-mold earplug.

Here is one example, but there are more,

Here\'s the molding material.

I did a search for wireless in helmet or under helmet earbuds and
ran across

I have been searching for a while. The ones that look primising are
expensive enough that I can\'t simply buy them to see if they will
work.

My current favorite disposable ear plugs (3M 1100) provide 37 dB noise
reduction. I can\'t imagine a music device getting anywhere close.

And, I was hoping to avoid another battery to charge.

Please try the difference. You will never go back. The experience is,
of course, very strange at first, so you will need to give yourself a
few days to get used to the new sensation.

Several years back, I read an article about a test that had been
performed with a variety of helmets. Even the quietest ones were well
above harmful noise levels.

The type of noise is very wide band, so I does not feel \"ear
piercingly\" loud, but there is a lot of energy hammering your ears.

No, it\'s the wind going through a helmet that makes things loud.
The exhaust noise is left largely behind.

That might be the sensible thing to do but it would diminish the bad
boy image. Bikers tend to get in the passing lane and stay there.
Cops don\'t
make too big a deal of it usually. I\'m not sure where the wind becomes
an issue. I\'m more or less used to it and wear the cheap plastic plugs.
My favorite place to ride is the Nebraska Sandhills. That\'s where
the cattle ranches
are. It\'s a long ways between towns and there isn\'t much traffic.

I have problems with wind noise in my headphones while walking,

slowing down, may reduce it, but it\'s not going away.

I\'ve been using Shure SE215s for a long time; first the wired version
with no mic, now the Bluetooth version with a mic (since the 3.5mm plug
was eliminated from my new phone... grrr.)

Specs say 37dB! I mostly believe it; I don\'t have a good way to measure
that, but they do a damned fine job at eliminating all of the noise that
my cow-orkers put out :)

I ride a K1300GT and at highway speeds the wind noise is annoying, so I
too wear earplugs. I do find that the regular ear plugs dampen the wind
noise enough that I can actually hear my Sena Bluetooth helmet speakers
fairly clearly - enough to answer the phone and listen to podcast talks.

Certainly much clearer than I can when not wearing earplugs.

These are good quality acoustic earplugs, not the foam ones you get by
the box full for noisy workplaces...

I find that when I walk the dog with my noise cancelling headphones - I
guess it compensates for noise that is not there and over comepensates
somehow. Ordinary \'phones seem ok!

An ideal solution for bikers is something that cuts most of the
wind noise
but allows one to hear things like car horns. It would really be nice
if there
was some gizmo that would adjust for headwind.
The Center for Disease Control puts normal conversation at 60 dB.
Potential
hearing loss can start at 70 dB over time.
Some states don\'t allow the stuff RoRo is asking about.
