Will a APC SmartUPS run without batteries installed?

I am troubleshooting a bad UPS and am not sure if it is supposed to turn
on without batteries installed. Refer to thread "APC SmartUPS smoked
with new batteries" for more information on this unit. As of now, there
are no batteries installed and unit emits a weak squeal from speaker
while power button is depressed. There is no click of relays.

I have 3 APC UPS's and 1 Emerson here in our place. If I remove the
batteries, or have them go dead, they will not start. Apparently when the
power is off, if the batteries are not working right, they will not start
up. I cannot remember, but this may be in the instructions. I am not sure.

The bottom line is, in most models of UPS's from what we found, if the
batteries are not working right, the UPS will not start. If you are trying
to service an APC unit yourself, take care that they will not sell the
service manuals, or parts to outside service people. Because of this, when
we get these in for service, we ship them back to the APC rep. Infact, we
found it comes out cheaper than if we were to have our own people fix it, or
even for me to do it myself!

No, it won't. APC units absolutely need their batteries connected
before you stand even a chance of getting them to power on.

You have just remined me of something....thank you.

Within a switching power supply, you have what is called a kicker circuit.
A kicker circuit is there to assist the switching power supply in getting
started. Now please please please let me be right on this. The battery
supply, in a ups, supplies power to help the ups switching supply initially
turn on....

If I am correct, if you remove the battery the ups should not start. You
need that battery to start the ups.

Reminded you of what? Why your battery charger doesnt work?

Nope...
To remind me that a switching power supply kicker oscillator needs to be
working before the switching power supply can start working...I was trying
to remember what powered the kicker oscillator to begin with.

No, it won't. APC units absolutely need their batteries connected

On all the APC units I've worked on, the internals power is supplied
by the battery voltage. No battery = no voltage to the logic
circuitry. Makes sense as soon as you realize that's the only voltage
that's guaranteed to be present.
