Why do transistor equivalent do it

I went to a web site last night and put in "TIP102" one of the results was
"TIP101"


Yeah sure, but not so fast,
a TIP102 is 100 Vceo, while TIP101 is 80 Vceo


It reminds me of some clown that used a 2n3055 in a color TV power supply,
were a BU326 should be used, It might be happy while the set is running,
but when you turn the set on the Vceo is exceeded causing the transistor to
get stressed out and fail.
