Photosensor in that DVI module for recent JVC TVs. It's primary
purpose (from second-hand source like ohio nesda artcle WARNED techs
NOT to pull rear panel while set is live or in standby. The light
falling on that sensor will trip the copyright protection programmed
into DVI module's micro to blow data away in eeprom, practically a
sucide mode. This type is not warrented and cost 200 to replace.

Have to remember exactly which JVC models has this and carefully check
no power before rear panel pulled off and also remember which to put
in jumper block or unhook wires to that module.

I'm really FURIOUS about this idea. Hard to avoid accidents with that
especially for techs. >:-( )

Oh, I was sure the sevice manual didn't say about this either.

Cheers,

Find the photo sensor, and put some black tape over it!

I would have to see this to believe it...

What would be the purpose of this?

What would be the purpose of this?
More difficult and expensive servicing. This will marginally result in more
sales of new units, especially once a few more companies get bought out or
outsource their entire product.

It used to be "business is business" but now it's business is war. While I
don't believe the original post, I certainly do not disbelieve it, and it sure
wouldn't hurt me to unplug a set before taking the back off.

Speaking of which, when you do alot of sets sometimes you forget ! One time I
changed the EPROM in an RCA and was suprised to find the horizontal in perfect
sync, reason ? I completely forgot to unplug the set ! Apparently I managed to
solder it in without shorting anything out :)

So much for today's anecdote :)
