Where to get this tiny spring

I have an Emerson 27 inch TV/DVD/VCR combo wal-mart sells.
Recently its DVD's flap came off ( oh those kids ! ). ( The spring
loaded flap that opens up when you eject/insert a DVD disk )

I managed to fix the flap without much difficulty.
The spring that kept the flap closed was missing unfprtunately. As a
result it remains open all the time. Its is really simple to fix it
once I get that spring.
Where does one get such a spring. I searched in radioshack and home
depot.
Its not really a unique spring. Its the same kind most of the VCRs and
DVD will have
Will I have to call Emerson ? Are there any other options ?
Thanks for teh time

Make one. :) Shape it from the spring wire from a retractable ball
point penn or something like that. As you say, not rocket science.

Thanks for the reply:
I did not think of the ball point pen.
While it is not a bad idea - I will definitely try that if nothing else
works - I was wondering if there is any other alternatives.

I will have to make one for sure. But if there is any place to buy a bunch
of springs - of different tensions and sizes - that will be much easier.

Someone asked " ... if there is any place to buy a bunch of

Look in the Yellow Pages under hardware stores. If you can
find a hardware store that still advertises in the Yellow
Pages, and is still in business, it will likely have a great
assortment of springs. Most of those stores where I live
have gone out of business, replaced by Lowe's and Home
Depot, at which I've never found a good assortment of
springs.

or:
Put a blob of Blu-Tac (is that an international brand?) on the lid.

I usually borrow these type of generic parts (screws, springs, brackets,
clips, etc.) from a "dead" carcass VCR which becomes a "donor" machine.

Without being too nasty, might I suggest that someone who has to ask:
"Is there any place you can buy a bunch of springs" probably doesn't
have the required handyman skills to attempt this job? :)

Electronics distributors and surplus places usually have spring
assortments.

Perhaps available as a repair part from the manufacturer, but it
is so small (and cheap, likely a few cents at most) that it is not
economical to sell them. This is part of the bane of modern,
mass-produced technology. Frequently cheaper/easier to toss
and replace than to repair.

I will have to make one for sure. But if there is any place to
buy a bunch of springs - of different tensions and sizes - that
will be much easier.
Hardware stores frequently have selections of springs, but they
tend to be larger and heavier (made for general domestic and
light industrial use). I've never seen any that sell those tiny and
delicate things like are used in VCRs.

OTOH, these same hardware stores (and hobby stores, esp.
those that cater to the R/C model crowd) sell "piano wire"
or "spring wire" of a remarkable range of gauges, including
perhaps the gauge it would take to reproduce this spring.

The flap on a VCR cartridge has a small spring. There are usually some inside
also. Have used these for similar applications.

Seems selling springs doesn't make a profit.....

I find myself wondering where the missing spring is.

It might be somewhere inside the VCR, and might someday do something
you won't like, like jam up the mechanism or short out something on
the circuit board.

If you think there's a chance it might be inside the VCR case, I
think it's worth some effort to find it...

I once lost a screw inside a Compaq portable computer (back when
portable implied owning a wheelbarrow). Never mind what I said when
I lost it... I found it jammed between some traces on the
motherboard and the metal case. I was glad I found it before turning
the power on!

Mebbe a small rubber band could be made to work? Taped off as needed so it
doesn't pop off?

Note to OP- have you turned the thing upside down and shaken it, and swept
that room with a magnet?

aem sends...

See if there's a mom & pop hardware store in your area, not a big
conglomerate like Home Depot. Bring the spring to the store, if
you still have it, and see if the manager there can help you
find it. Mom & pop hardware stores tend to be much more helpful
for unusual parts than the big box stores.

Look for Parts Express and MCM Electronics. It's been a few years since
I looked at them, but at least one of those outfits sells/sold mechanical
parts and electronic components for repair of VCRs and other consumer
electronics.
