When will new DVDs all be Blu-ray

I mostly play what I record, but my friend rents DVDs and doesn't want
to buy any DVD recorder unless it can play and maybe record Blu-ray.

I know thse are hard questions, but maybe you can help me out:

How long until DVDs for rent, the recenly released movies, will only
be Blu-ray?
Is there any point in having Blu-ray now if one's tv is still analog,
or digital but less than 24 inches. (They don't make any hi-def tv's
that are less than 24 inches, do they?)

My friend is concerned that in 2 or 4 years the only DVDs for rent
will be Blu-ray, and she doesn't want to buy a good player now, only
for it to obsolete soon because it doesn't play Blu-ray. How long
before the DVDs she would want to rent, current movies, are only for
rent in blu-ray? If you're not sure, how about a best guess?

How long until the sell things that record Blu-ray at a low price?

HD-DVD / Blu-Ray formats are STUPID.
They exist only for the uber-rich.

Folks who used to watch regular DVDs on cross-country flights
are now finding their batteries don't last long enough
to see the whole movie
(the hi-def formats require lots of computing power.)
and what they see on their tiny screens
is no different than what they used to see with regular DVDs.

Like I said: STUPID.

If they didn't have to knock out a wall to get your TV into your house
(or build your house around it),
you will NEVER see the difference between hi-def and regular.
All you will do is piss away money pursuing the latest buzzword.

Considering you can get a DVD player for a few tens of dollars, why stress
over it ?

Just pick up a cheap one, and wait until Blu-ray prices come down. DVDs are
not going to disappear any time soon.

over it ?

Because some people don't have as much money as they wish they had.

A few tens of dollars is real money for many of them.

In this case, my friend already has a DVD player, but given that it is
a cheap one, it is already giving her problems. Buying cheap is not
always the thrifty thing to do.

In addition, VCR's will be largely obsolete next February. She needs
a recorder, not just a player, and preferably one that will play
blu-ray. It doesn't have to record them.

I've suggested to her that for quite some time to come, rental DVDs
will be made available in standard format not just Blu-ray, even for
the newly released movies, but I don't really know that, so I'm asking
here.

I've suggested to her that her best buy for the money is a DVD
recorder with a digital tuner and a hard drive, which sells for 300
dollars, that's thirty tens, but if it turns out that new releases are
going to be in blu-ray only within the next 2 or 4 years, then my
suggestion is incorrect.

From reading many answers on many groups, I think a lot of people on
the net don't realize that many people are limited in how much money
they can spend, on entertainment and other non-necessities, and even
on necessities like food and rent.

My friend lives a modest life, but she will never have her home
mortgage foreclosed on and will never have to spend off all her
mother's money, or all her money, in order to get medical care paid
for by the other citizens of this country. In New Zealand terms,
she'll always be able to pay her bills and never have to depend on
charity or government programs for poor people.

Just pick up a cheap one, and wait until Blu-ray prices come down. DVDs are
not going to disappear any time soon.

Everyone has a different idea of what soon is.

Depends what she wants to do over the interevening few yars. If you keep
waiting for the next great thing to become affordable, then you will be
waiting forever. Because there will always be something else 'just around
the corner'.

I'm in the USA where analog tv won't be broadcast after next February.

One will be able to use a digital converter, if he sets it to the
station to be recorded, and if he turns on the VCR, by hand or with a
timer.

So if one is not home, he will only be able to record shows on the
station that the converter is set to, whose setting he will have to
check every time he leaves home that he intends to tape something.

So the vcr will be largely obsolete.
