What is that fine black 'dust' one sees inside monitors when the case is
removed?

Just curious

Jackie

You know how you type away at something, but your PC hasn't responded, and
your keystrokes have been lost?

Well they haven't really.

That 'dust' is thousands of dead keystrokes.

Yep. and its very very toxic. since youve opened the back, youll have
dislodged some, which means its now ILLEGAL to dispose of it in
standard tips. You cant vacuum it, or your vacuum cleaner will spray
it straight through the filter into the air. only thing i dcan think
of is to sprinkle it on your keyboard, from whence it came.

** IME it can be one or more of the following:

1. Residue of cigarette smoke collected by the EHT wiring.

2. Photocopier toner dust similarly collected - if a copier is nearby.

3. House dust collected and carbonised by the huge voltage gradients
around the EHT wiring.

Horrible stuff in all cases.

also seen on the casing around the ends of fluro tubes, and anywere that
heat is generated consistantly (cd players, printers, VCR's (not nesesseraly
around the power supply) .

i think its carbon from heating crap in the air,but i'm not sure.

You get it even with no smokers around at all.

2. Photocopier toner dust similarly collected - if a copier is nearby.
Ditto.

3. House dust collected and carbonised by
the huge voltage gradients around the EHT wiring.
Its too fine for that.

Its actually the result of arcing, and much worse when the FBT is dying.

Horrible stuff in all cases.
Wont do you any harm.

You dont see the same very fine black soot like stuff
in a VCR as you see inside a monitor outer shell tho.

i think its carbon from heating crap in the air,
Nope, you dont see it with say a fan heater.

but i'm not sure.
Its basically the result of the arcing thats inevitable in a monitor
and much worse when the FBT is dying or has died.

I thought it was all the left-over half-cycles from half-wave rectifiers.

a fan heater is pushing air, i.e. the air is not static.

Not the stuff that ends up on the inner

Dont believe it. Its too fine for that and the distribution
inside the outer case doesnt fit that either.

** All the facts fit.

Electrostatically charged soot consists of very fine particles,
follows air currents and sticks to plastic and metal.
