A boob tube is an item of clothing worn by women over their 'boobs'

Type 7193 triode, used in the uhf section of the ww2 19
tank radio sets. Two top caps, one anode, other grid,
from memory.

Known as a "horned triode" in my mispent youth.

"Acorn" valves were another and more successful
attempt to reduce lead inductance and probably
interelectrode capacitance as well...

Around the 1970's, the "boob tube" refered to the normal fare offered by
television. Numerous interpretations, of course, but all along the lines
of the obvious.

I believe that was a French tube - they were always ahead of the curve...

What was the concept behind the Mullard 'Gold Top' variant of the ECC83?
Can't find anything online about them.

No idea, but could have been selected for characteristics like
noise, or gain matching of the two triodes. The military and
computer people had special ruggedised or selected types from
the normal range. For example, 12AX7 / ECC83 ~= 5751.

Years ago, we used to hand select BC... silect transistors for
noise out of batches of transistors that TI had already
selected for hfe and noise for us...
