I don't know why I have it. I don't know what it is other than it's a cable
with a stereo plug on one end and what appears to be a light on one end with

Maybe part of one of those TV remote control relay devices that can be used
to change the channel on a satellite receiver from another room.

That is probably 100% correct. I have both "professional" and home-made
versions of these, and use them with "Powermid" remote control
extenders.
