What is this SMD component ?

Hello everyone,

I blew one part on an old compaq laptop computer (25 Lite, 386). The
computer was working, the case was open, a wire touched a metal part
and some smoke went out...

The component that looks defective (small burn mark in the middle) is
near the CPU.

I'm not use to work with SMD components. I think it's a SOT-23 case.
It's written 72BA on the component. The writting on the PCB show this
is Q502. Is this a transistor ? npn ? pnp ? fet ?

Is this a popular part ? What do you thing this is ?

Thank you for your time.

If you want this thing repaired, and its still undrer warrenty, then send
it back
to compaq.

Otherwise fugged about it. Its a gonner. No way in hell compaq will ever
tell
you the actual transistor number for that location number.
Q-502 is a location number. its doubtfull that anyone at compaq
would ever have a schematic on the computer.
Sorry.

It's an IC voltage regulator in a 3 lead package...

Check your local electronic supplier - tell them you
need a National or Fairchild SOT-23 or equivalent.

Good luck, and be more careful next time :)

Great ! Now i know what to look for.

Next time if I want smoke, i'll lit up some wood instead of computer equipment.

A thousand thanks Ken !
