What is this chip from broken electric fence?

This is a small electric fence set up for livestock. I used it to keep foxes away from my ducks in past and now try to keep dogs in.

My dog kept going through it and I found it wasn't working. I only have checked the wire to ground as far as working. DOg checked it also and she says it don't work and I can run loose.
All there is to it is a transformer and something shaped like a big capacitor. Says on it

Maybe go see a psychiatrist and tell them about the talking dog, some
medication for you might in order for you.

You should keep the dog inside, electric fences are cruel.

If you were taking care of your dog properly, you would be taking it for
walks, letting it stay out side on good days on a runner with fresh food
and water for him.

Maybe the dog does not like you ! And there is no reason to use a
electric fence on a dog. You want the dog to obey you, not the fence!
for that to happen, you need to take care of it, like give it some
attention.

You treat your pets like your kids.. Do you also keep the kids in via
an electric fence?

If you were taking care of your dog properly, you would be taking it for

103 would mean 10 000 picoFarads
The M confuses me, because 10 000 microFarads
at 8000 Volts would be a lot.
3 is the number of zeros to append.

A capcitor for Cuntinuous Current Output must also be a new invention.

Electric fences make pulses in the 1000 to 3000 Volt range.
Can clearly hear them in a small medium wave radio, if you have one.

TO all of you telling me how to keep my dogs in my situation I'll only say you don't know anything about things here. Dog will get shocked once and that is all. Have any of you ever been shocked by one of these fences? I doubt it since you probably live in city and have no knowledge of county life. I've been shocked by these a dozen times and its no big deal.
I do walk dogs, I take them in woods, let them run free and they spend hours swimming in the creek, when dog catcher isn't around. I live on edge of small town in Ozarks, Not NY or some other hell hole. Dogs are in a big yard where they can run free except for the fence.

You don't say how it is wired. Is the cap thingy on the primary or
secondary of the transformer? Can you see if the manufacturer is on
line and selling replacement parts? (might give some idea what it is
and how it works)

It's been ages since I saw one, but they had these things that worked
something like turn signal flashers to pulse the line periodically.
They were plug-in devices - not wired-in the way a cap would be.

There are some do it yourself schematics on the web for building an
"electric fence charger." If you can build one... Most use old auto
ignition coils for the transformer.

I have problems with cats - clawing on furniture, scraping at the
windows letting me know it is feeding time, etc.. I hate re glazing
windows, and they just don't make Kevlar upholstery. Two shocks is all
it takes and they never do it again. I bought this cold cathode
fluorescent inverter from American Science and Surplus, $2, requires
12 VDC 700 milliamps.

Feels more like a burn than a shock, but there's a tingle there too.
The frequency is high so it wouldn't be good for a very long fence.

Using a metallic collar and leash keeps both lifeforms inside the
perimeter simultaneously. This technique also limits current because of
the 'series' resistance effect. Very humane...or is that dogmane?

Just as a followup, I've probably been shocked 30 to 40
times with 120Vac. Has made me want to avoid getting shocked but
it hasn't altered my mental state my mental state in any
way that a I notice I notice.

The transformer puts out very high voltage. No load output measurements show almost 20,000 peak. However, it is also very very low current, so any loading, such as an animal touching the fencer output instantly drops it down to about 1,000 volts. Weeds growing up and touching the wire can also drain the voltage down. That big blue thing, is a capacitor. The 103 on it means it is .01mf (micro farad) and the 8K means it is rated at 8,000 volts D.C. rated at 8,000 volts D.C., it can survive in an A.C. circuit (which it is, the transformer puts out high voltage, the 120 volts at 60 cycles per second on the input to the trans gets stepped up to the 20,000 or so, same 60 cycles) about two and a half times its D.C. rating. If you can't find a 8,000 volt capacitor, you can solder four 2,000 volt ones in series, but the capacitance will be less. Four .01 caps in series only make one cap that is four times the voltage but would only be about .0025MF. It would still put out a good shock though.
