What is requirement to keep names like Memory after the MDA

With verilog we allowed the memories to have callbacks set on them .
What was the requirement of the MDA's . I mean, was it a concept to
help the developers get a array of memories or that actually exists in
real time ?
MDA's as such looks more like a language requrement and not
hardware ???/
