what is "microelectronics"

I'm going to a new school to start my EE training in the fall, and
while perusing their website I came across a microelectronics
scholarship/coop program. Frankly, I'm not really sure what
"microelectronics" entails based on their suggested courses for the
focus, but it seems like there is a lot of material science stuff in
the curriculum. I was wondering if someone could spare a free moment
to give me a brief overview of microelectronics so I can make
decisions. I don't particularly want to persue microelectronics if I
won't enjoy it, but the coops/scholarships would be nice if it seems
interesting.
