What is an RS-232 transceiver?

Hello All,
I am trying to do some work with embedded systems, but have no
background in EE. Can anyone tell me what an RS-232 transceiver does,
and what are its input and output pins for?

Thanks in advance.

An RS-232 transceiver, such as a MAX-232, is a level translator and
inverter. The serial I/O on a microcontroller is TTL levels, with a
logic 1 being 3-5 volts, and a 0 being near zero volts. RS-232 levels
are inverted, and typically +/-12V or so (I think the spec allows 3 -
25 volts). An RS-232 "1" is a negative voltage, and a "0" is a
positive voltage, so the transceiver has to invert the signal, and
increase the voltage swing.
