What is a positor?

I'm helping a friend repair a tv and came across what is termed a
positor in the power supply - what is it, and what does it do? (and
how do I test it!)
I've seen people refer to these as PTC resistors (I know what these
are) but this device has three legs.

a "posistor" is the same as a "PTC"
maybe PTC sands for Posistor T??? C??? does anybody else know?

just like "frame" is the same as "field"

Hi Eric,

That stands IMHO for "Positive Temperature Coefficient"

thanks I forgot that, Sorry I have these dork attacks from time to time.

Positive Temperature Coefficient, AFAIK.

Positive temperature coefficient resistor. Aonther name that might be
used is PTC varistor.

This is the device that controls the current in the de-gaussing circuit.
It is 2 TC pellets. One is a PTC and the other is an NTC. One is in
series with the mains AC input to the coil and the other is across
the coil acting as a shunt.

They are in thermal contact with each other so that the one which gets hot
controls the other one. I'll leave it to the reader to decide which is
which. 8Ź)

More preferably "PTC thermistor"

"Varistor" is usually taken to mean the type of voltage dependent resistor
(VDR) that exhibits a very high resistance up to a well-defined threshold
voltage then abruptly changes to low resistance (Panasonic ZNR, Siemens
(Epcos) SIOV, etc).
