What causes fade in and out

Hi - I am curious as to what causes the fade in and out problem on
older cassettes and 8 tracks... For some reason I only noticed this
problem in cars (that is systems installed in the vehicles :) ).

Probably worn tape guides. The tracks are very narrow.
