If yer going to get DirectTV anyway, and you know yer going to be
upgrading yer receiver(s) from what you can get from DirectTV, then
hang onto that old receiver.

Had a friend who went and got himself DirectTV, bought these really
high-end receivers, and returned the old receivers. He then moved to
an address in a different city, and DirectTV didn't tie HIM or his
account to the old receiver he returned. So they lost track of who had
turned in that receiver.

When he went to terminate service, DirectTV told him they OWNED the
new receivers he's purchased from Best Buy, and if he didn't return
the old receiver, they'd TAKE the new ones instead. He tried to tell
them that he HAD returned the old receiver, but they didn't believe
him.

Ended up going to court. DirectTV won. He paid all that money, thought
HE owned those receivers, turned out DirectTV does, no matter where
you buy them, AND he had court costs to pay on top of it all.

Lesson learned... don't deal with DirectTV, and if you do, scrounge up
an extra free receiver.
