Weller usually makes great products, but this isn't one of them.I bought this to do some soldering at home. I've had this for about a month, and I'm ditching it to get a standard table model. Here's why:The iron only gets hot when you hold the button. However, if you let go of the button, it cools off really quickly. So you have to press and hold the button the entire time you are soldering. When I say hold, I mean you really have to put pressure on it the entire time. This is really annoying, especially when trying to do delicate work. The battery life is terrible as well. On a fresh set of batteries, I only manage to get about 15 minutes of quality soldering. After that, the solder will melt on the tip, but the tip won't be hot enough to heat up any metal for the solder to bond to. I tried several different types of batteries with the same results. The batteries also get quite warm which, while probably not dangerous, was a bit unsettling. This product would only be suitable if you were in a situation where you needed a portable iron for a location without electricity, and even then you would probably only get one use per set of batteries. If you were thinking t
his would make a good beginner/hobby iron, you would be incorrect. If you're just starting out, spend the extra money and get an entire soldering station. It will pay off in the long run.
received this for christmas and am not disappointed. this is ideal for small soldering jobs that will be quick. it does take a little longer than 15 seconds to fully heat up. its a little awkward to continually press a button to stay on instead of a switch but its not to bad. i've used this to fix some kids toys and repaired the wifes hairdryer switch and it has worked perfectly. overall this is a good product if you are looking for a quick, small repair tool without the long wait for corded soldering irons to heat up.
Thought I didn't buy this product on Amazon.com, I felt compelled to share my thoughts on it. This is one of the most useless tools I have ever purchased. I bought the item because it was advised as a good instrument for soldering on circuit boards. Unfortunately, it takes forever for the tip to get hot enough to melt the solder, and by the time it does start to melt, it's as though the iron shuts off. It is extremely frustrating when trying to remove solder. It's almost as though it doesn't get hot enough. I regret that I did not purchase a standard corded soldering iron with a higher wattage. This is totally useless! If I could rate it 0 stars, I would. This product is far from deserving of even one star.
I just started using this product today. It's crap! After five minutes of soldering on and off the tip stopped heating and the red power LED wasn't coming on. I couldn't handle the batteries when I took them out. They were very hot! I took this product apart and found the slider piece became unwelded. It's a slim piece of metal. The heat backed up into the product. Buyers beware!
I bought one of these soldering irons at RadioShack, on sale for $9.95. It works pretty good. Only drawbacks are that there is not much power, and that if you use it a lot, it will eat batteries.I would recommend the iron only for light duty circuit board work because on anything bigger, it can't keep up, and if you plan on using it a lot, get a couple sets of NiMH rechargeables and a fast charger (1 hour). It is, however, better than a Cold Heat, since it has a real metal tip instead of one of those brittle graphite electrodes.
Perfect for around-the-house repairs and soldering jobs, the BP645 from Weller heats up quickly and offers enough power for several routine soldering jobs.
The battery-powered soldering iron from Weller is perfect for field service repair on small parts and components. It heats up to working temperature in under 15 seconds and the red LED indicates when power is on. The protective safety cap turns off the power when it's placed on the tool. With one set of fresh batteries, this iron will handle over 120 intermittent solder joints. This kit includes iron, tip, three AA batteries, lead-free solder, and tip wrench.
