Weird Things In VCRs.....

A friend of mine and I were talking today about some of the things we've
taken out of VCRs.
Usually they were brought to the shop by perplexed owners with complaints
like....
It made a weird noise and went off,
Worked fine yesterday,
etc etc etc.
The first question that pops to mind is usually, Do you have kids in the
house?
On my list of things taken out of VCRs is....
poker chips
sticks of gum/candy
small action figures
marbles
and at the top of the list.....
a freshly dead, slightly shriveled goldfish.
Any other additions?

grossest things ever found? Hundreds of roaches. I refused to work on
it. Got out of the business shortly after that. Too many roaches. I can
smell the little bastards. The vcr reminded me of the movie "Joe's
Apartment".

I've found quite a few odd things in VCRs and optical drives that were
probably put there by kids, but my favourite story is still the potatoe
farmer who fixed a dry joint in his TV by shoving a spud between the PCB
and chassis - worked great for a year or so until the vegetable decayed
and corroded the board beyond repair.

here are some of mine.....
a blank unused c-60 audiocassette in a Betamax vcr.
part of a child`s action man in a VHS deck found dumped.
some flyers for a fried chicken restaurant-takeaway and
rare old coins in the back of an old grundig tv!
a half melted chocolate sweet in an ancient sharp vcr which had not
been used since the early 1990s- had to remove entire idler assembly
to clear that up!
and a cockroach once in a Sony machine. An unpleasent surprise that
one.

I have found:

Quarters pennies etc.
A whole chocolate chip cookie.
Matchbox cars.
Plastic gamepieces.
Poker chips.
wedged in compact discs.
Stick on labels.
Human Urine!

I found out about the last one after I handled the customers vcr! BLECCH! No
wonder I got an infection in my finger shortly after...
I also had a woman who brought in a vcr which had a tape that had vomit on it
inside! I told her to throw it away..She was insulted?!?!

for roaches, once I made the mistake of trying to fix a phone
answering machine full of the things. I can still remember that
appalling smell 10 years later and it still makes me feel sick. Never
again....

Ha ha ha .... all of those things mentioned but here are my 2 favorites
..

A lady that had to be 70 years old brought one in and said `` my tape
wont eject ``
I unstuck the porno tape When she came back to get it she realy
acted funny when she saw that tape on her machine .

The other one is when i found this real thick sticky stuff coating the
insides .
I called the owner & he said he used salad oil to lubricate it ...

Had to work on a old Chromacolor II console that was a 24 hour roach
party/circus/orgy. The little bastards got into the Circus Breaker and
caused it to fail. It was
so bad that when I pulled the back off, I could not see the other side as
it was covered with roaches. Had to bag that disgusting mess and spray
about 3 cans of roach killer in it. Then we waited 3 days. Had to work
on it outside in the snow. That was the worst case of roaches that I
remember. Had a CB radio come in the same way once. I threw it out the
back door and told the guy I could not fix it.

In terms of human roaches, I had a service call in a trailer park. There
were old people living there and they had the heat up to about 88 in
winter and they hadn't showered in weeks. I almost lost it. I gave up
after a couple of minutes and called for a pickup. I hated going into
people's houses. The guy I was working for at the time seemed to cater to
the human garbage out there. I quit shortly thereafter.

Ahh the war stories....

Found an extra head in a VCR once.

Our Sony was misbehaving a bit -- wouldn't take a cassette for some
reason, so I took it to the shop and opened it up.

There, underneath where the cassette would go, was the head of a "Lego"
figure, just a bit too tall to allow the cassette to fully seat.

At least it wasn't a peanut butter and jelly sandwich the kid had shoved
through the slot.

It is unlike anything you have smelt before. Roach's give off some sort
of scent and humans can't detect one or two usually, but when you get a
few thousand, the stench is just plain nasty. How does one describe a
smell like that? It is similar to the smell of human filth. The same
filth that street people exude in the summertime when they haven't bathed
or showered in weeks. Wood roaches are not the same thing as they are
black. The ones I refer to are the brown variety that can infest whole
neighborhoods. I would lose my mind if I had to live with an infestation
of roaches. I couldn't go to sleep knowing the little bastards were
around. Pull TV truck duty in a large city like NY or Chicago. You will
get a roach party-house in a few weeks. Maybe just delivering TV sets
would be enough. I have been in houses where I refused to sit down on the
sofa. Roach races up and down the walls could keep one entertained for
hours. &lt I refused to even look at a TV when I saw that. Maybe it is
the roach dookie all over that stinks, but whatever it is, I am not
getting anywhere close to them again. Where I live now, we don't even get
mosquitoes. Too hot and dry in the summertime. I found my usual 4-5 last
year. In Chicago, I would see thousands or maybe millions per year.

Howdy and Happy New Year,
My research revealed that these small brown roaches which like to
live around warm components such as power transformers are known as
"German" ones.
The smell from a serious infestation of them is unlike anything
else I can think of. Nothing like the smell from where mice have been,
and very much worse (to me anyway). It grabs you by the nostrils and
makes you feel really sick in the guts. It's a kind-of rotten stench,
maybe a bit like stale urine. Sorry I can't describe it better.
You'll find out if you have to repair a microwave oven or VCR etc
where you can see that roaches have been running around the warm
vacuum fluorescent display....

I had an old GE VCR on which the sound failed. Had it repaired at
local shop, $65 (I know, I know!) with 90 day warranty on the repair.
On the 91st day, the sound quit again. How do they do that?

I had a good one. Opened up a VCR and found a mouse nest in there. Even with
the cassette door still intact, the little buggers were living in there. I
guess they were even smart enough to open the door to come and go.
