Weird AC and battery charging problems, help

I have a Compaq Presario 1510T which is Really an Evo N100C, as I just
discovered...

My AC adapter does not charge the batteries any longer. The adapter
had some problem with contact in general, after a year or so. But if
I pushed it in really hard and even propped it with something, then it
would give the laptop juice and charge the batteries. I gave it in to
be fixed, they returned it to me unfixed, for some reason. Now I have
a NEW problem! The AC "juicing" works just fine, the adapter goes in
normally, but now it doesn't charge the batteries at all. The yellow
orange charging light comes on and instead of being solid, it just
blinks and blinks and nothing gets charged after hours of connection.
I tried it with a battery that had 6% and with one that had 70% -
nada...
Any ideas what the problem might be?

Also, is there an external battery charger that would work with this
model
(also compatible with Presario 900, 1500 and 2800 series)?

The only one I found was by Compaq and cost $600 to $900 new and about
$300
used. There must be something cheaper to be found, I hope. I've seen
external Toshiba chargers for about $120.00, new. HELP, please!

By your description, the electrical part of your computer is working now. It
is possible that your gel cell is not longer good. These have a definite
life span, of usually about 2 to 3 years on the average. You should get the
battery checked.

If the lights on the computer come on and the computer is working, then it
should be electrically okay. You can also take a DVM, and see if there is
actual voltage coming out of the contacts where the battery pack is
connected, to see if there is charge voltage at that point. If there is,
then change the battery.

Gel cells last about 3 years average with normal use, using it for about 900
to 1200 charge cycles. Sometimes they can last a bit longer. The most I
have seen them last under normal use was about 4 to 5 years.

As for your power adaptors, if they are defective, or whatever is defective,
you will have to end up replacing the defective parts if you want to use the
machine. For these machines there are generally no generic type
replacements. And, when using substitute power packs and etc, there is the
chance that something can be damaged if there is a mismatch of some type.

I did "think again", Mike, and checked them inside a friend's laptop -
they work and charge ok.
My question is not so much about repairs, but rather finding a way to
charge the batteries externally.

This is new information. You actually verified experimentally. That's
different.
External chargers are gonna be specific to a battery type and expensive
and they won't work with your next computer. It's generally NOT
possible to just hook up volts and charge a computer battery. Using the
wrong charger can cause a fire. That leaves you buying the expensive
one or fixing the laptop.

First thing I'd try is fixing the busted connector on your laptop.
Another thing that happens is case screws get loose and the battery
isn't held tightly against the connector. But you didn't want to know
about that, so I won't mention it.
