Washing machine lower drive shaft lubrication

I'm getting ready to reassemble my old Maytag A106 washing machine
after stripping it down for rebuild. I'm starting to reassemble the
transmission. hopefully for someone who knows Maytags, I removed the
old O ring seal from the inside top bushing of the lower housing, (it
came out in pieces, hard as a rock), and was about to install the new
one and the main drive shaft when it occurred to me that the upper
bushing must get lubricated from the spiral groves in the upper
section of the shaft but how does the lower bushing get lubricated?
The O ring should keep all the transmission oil up in the
transmission, right? So then in theory theres no oil in the lower
section? On my machine, both the lower bushing and the lower section
of the shaft are slightly scored but not to the point of having
excessive play, and although the whole thing was a greasy mess when I
dissassembled it presumably from the upper O ring drying out and
leaking for years apparently it seems that there was some kind of
lower lubrication issue. Should I just coat the lower shaft and
bushing with transmission oil before I reassmble them? Or perhaps a
thick wheel bearing grease? Or if the surfaces do in fact rely on oil,
how will they stay lubricated? There doesn't seem to be any kind of
lower shaft seal. Thanks very much. Lenny Stein.
