I would like to buy toroidal core for somewhere in the vacinity of mains
frequency of between 150 and 300VA for experimentation purposes. Anyone got
something with burnt out wiring for say $20 in melbourne?

Also, while I'm here. What do povo's like me use for a load of say 20ohm
180W+. I'm thinking of an arangment of 100's of resistors and a can of oil.

thanks,
gavin.

** WES Components in Sydney sell hollow tubular wire wound resistors of
50 or 100 watt rating in 8 and 16 ohms. Submerged in a container of water
the 100 watt ones can safely handle 1000 watts each.

A 160VA transformer (new) from Jaycar is about $50, a 300VA is about $70

My electric kettle meters out at about 30 Ohms. This will need water at
180W
A 2400W bar radiator is about 24W (hot) probably 20-22 cold (I don't have
one handy). This will not any liquid at 180W, maybe a little space. might
get to about 100 degrees C. to trim it to just the right resistance, remove
a couple of turns.

Cheers,

A burnt out one will most likely have damage to the primary as well and need
rewinding which is quite a feat by hand just get a new one
If I had one I would send it to you for cost of Postage.
I have been using a Toroid lately connected to a variac to simulate earth
loop problems - it seems to work very well :)

I intend to wind both primary and secondary windings. I expect it will take
a while.

The kettle sounds like a good idea.

Daniel, do you have manuals for Tektronix 7A15, and 7B50 modules for a 7603 frame?

With regard to dummy loads, we used to use light globes for testing
smps. and the Philips old K9 first gen colour TV had a light globe
load suggestion for fault finding on the power supply in the how it
works manual [who remembers when manufacturers used to supply cct
descriptions as welll as manuals?]
Lamps are excellent in that they provide a visual warning that gear is
powered up, are built to handle heat, are cheap and can be used for
fault diagnosis, flickering light etc.
