Wanted: Professional VCR repair -- UK

Hi all,

Apologies, I know this is a bit offbeat and that s.e.r is normally used
by those doing their own repairs.

I have a de Graaf model WHS HP3 video recorder which following a tape
jam, has a stuck cassette basket. My suspicion is that "de Graaf" is a
re-badge of one of the major makers, though I cannot tell which from
looking inside.

I don't have the patience or knowledge to fix this and am willing to
invest the money in having the machine professionally fixed for a couple
of reasons: a) it's an older, good quality model and b) it has the
ability to record Teletext subtitles (I'm deaf.)

Would anyone in N.W. England willing to undertake this repair please
contact me via email?

thanks.

If you cannot find where to take it through these newsgroups, I would
suggest to call the place where you bought the machine. These re-badged
machines are very difficult to have parts and service. I always stress to
people that if they are going to buy something that they plan to maintain,
and keep for a while, they should always stick to the higher end of the man
name brands.

We found that with many of the main stream appliances these days, parts and
service is getting very scarce, if the fault is in-debt. If you cannot get
service on your machine, I would suggest to call around to find out a
proper replacement.

Have you tried other name brand machines to see if they allow the teletext
to pass through? I was under the impression that there were some new
specifications where this was a must.

Also, check out the DVD recorders as well. They are expensive, but are much
better and more reliable than a VCR. There are a lot less moving parts. In
the DVD recorders, the Panasonic has a very good rating.

I have heard that many S-VHS video recorders are able to properly record
the Teletext signal. I have a VHS video recorder with a build-in teletekst
decoder which can record the subtitles on tape (the teletext signal itself
is not recorded properly). Possibly video recorders with this feature are
still being sold today.

Since the teletext signal is encoded in the invisible lines of the TV
picture, I doubt a DVD recorder records the teletext information. I know
that on a standard DVD only the visible lines of the image (576 lines of
the total of 625 lines on a PAL system) are stored on the disc.
