I see you're Bidding on that HP 6213A PS, only 45 Minutes To Go. I hope
you get it. The one I bought a few weeks ago was damaged in shipment,
or else the seller sold me an already cracked one that he didn't reveal
to bidders, so I sent it back and got a refund. I need at least 3 cases
for a couple other broken ones I have, and I figured the cheapest would
be the 6213As. The plastic is so brittle on those cases that if you try
to open them up, they will probably crack the back ring or the front
panel. Or worse yet, they could get cracked badly in shipment. The
clueless seller packed the one I got in a carton that was the same size
inside as the outside of the plastic case, no padding whatsoever. DUH!
Double DUH! >:-(

Er, huh? I'm uncertain of that question, but if you wanna know what it
is, then it's one of these. It's a Hewlett Packard low cost power
supply from the '70s that uses about 10 transistors. The 6214A has a
current adjustment pot, the 6213A does not, so it's even less useful
than the 6214A. They're good for 12V max at 1A.

The whole case and front panel is made from plastic that gets brittle
with age, and cracks easily. Since the case snaps together, unsnapping
the case often results in one or more broken parts. Good luck!

Over the years I've purchased about a dozen of those small Sorensen /
HP power supplies, with various voltages and features. They're a very
attractive small size with decent capability. Yep, about 40% of these
eBay items had suffered terminal plastic-case degradation (this is hard
to evalute when bidding, but I suspect this one will be OK), and were
really UGLY. But surprisingly all of them have found homes in various
Institute labs, or perhaps they simply developed legs and wandered off!

So now I'm on the eBay warpath again; we'll see how good the pickings
are. Sadly, nobody seems to make small-box supplies like that anymore.

Thanks,
- Win

I see that there are Elenco and Mastec PSes on Ebay with similar outputs
for well under a hundred dollars. The nice thing about these new PSes
is that they have digital panel meters, so the output can be adjusted
more accurately. I don't know how well the spacs compare, but the HP
PSes like the 6236(?) have a LM324 opamp in them and are simple, so I'm
guessing that the specs aren't all that bad.

I just got thru replacing the 2N458A Ge pass transistors in an old HP
723A with 2N5847 Si power transistors. Didn't oscillate - surprise.

Thanks,
- Win

I bought a couple Power Designs 2005 precision PSes on Ebay for about
$50 each with shipping, and they make an acceptable 20V .5A PS, if you
don't mind cranking the switch knobs. But a 10k or 20k 10-turn pot can
be connected to the terminals on the back for regular single knob
adjustment. I had to replace the neon lights on the front, and clean
the switch contacts, but they both worked acceptably afterwards.

I used a red high brightness LED to replace the overcurrent neon, and I
put 22k resistors in series with each lead. It works okay, maybe a bit
on the bright side. But a regular NE-2 wouldn't work because the V is
only about 55V. These PSes are well built and not too large, but
they're old timers from the '60s and '70s, so they demand a bit of
attention from time to time.

Thanks,
- Win
