Hello
Can anyone suggest either a source of supply of, or a formula for, or
a suitable substitute or replacement for the curiously characteristic
Philips solution to the clutch problem - the material "Vulcanan"? It
is used in at least two grades, 'hard' and 'soft', in the clutch
mechanism of various Philips reel-to-reel tape machines of the early
nineteen-sixties in particular.
It is a waxy resinous substance, used as the gripping side of
soft-start clutches. It deteriorates somewhat with age but is also
violently attacked and destroyed by any traces of solvent, especially
alcohol-based, that might be used elsewhere in the machine (or even
nearby on the workbench) in the course of general cleaning and
restoration.
Work-arounds in the form of hand-made rubber fabrications of various
materials are successful in keeping early machines 'on the road' but
in the interests of authenticity I would like to re-create the
original. When it works, it works very well and gives a very smooth
control over tape transport.
Thank you

If the 'self' is an illusion, who is being fooled?
