Volume control on audio system

Hi,

I have a middle to low end audio system and I noticed something strange and
annoying with the volume control. I was hoping that someone could explain
it for me ...

Say that it is set at a volume that is comfortable (or a bit loud) As I
lower the volume knob I find that there is no change in the volume until a
certain point and then suddenly the volume drops (and now it's too low). As
I turn the knob back up there is no change with the turning until suddenly
it jumps back up (slightly too loud again). It is so annoying that I will
have to upgrade sometime unless there is another way.

Is it the overall quality of the amp or the volume control or both ? Is it
fixable?

Thank you for your help

It is likely designed to step the volume in + or - 2db increments. You do
not state
whether the stepping action is in only one area of the volume knob or across
its
entire range. If it happens anywhere around the turning range, there's a
good chance
the stereo has a digital attenuator for volume adjustment.

Thanks for the reply.

The effect happens in the volume range where it's annoying. There is no
static though as I move the knob.

I wont be able to check the entire range anyway since it would be too loud
to check.

Do more expensive models have better volume controls?

TIA

I think it's fair to say that all but the most inexpensive modern audio
equipment has digital
potentiometers for volume control. My auto has such a volume control.

If you reduce your signal from the preamp, you can then place your volume
control in a
different spot and perhaps avoid the problem.

CP,
I had a similar problem on a Sanyo T/V a few years back.
I squirted some RP7 into it and it's been OK ever since. Only used in
the spare room & not used every day however the RP7 fixed the problem

****** More expensive than what?

Are we readers supposed to be mind readers?

The mind boggles!!!

Sounds like a dirty volume pot which is very common.
Spray some contact cleaner into the pot and turn it around a few
times.Should do the trick.
Cheers

Thanks again for the replies.

I hoped someone might have seen this problem before. (I dont think its a
dirty Pot though).

I certainly have seen the exact same problem on a TV volume (by remote).
The range of inaccessible volumes (via the knob or remote) is precisely
where I want to set the volume. Are all (or most) digital volume controls
in steps of 2dB?

As more precise low level volume control is an issue for me with my present
Yamaha setup , is it less likely to be an issue with more expensive
amplifiers?

I take the other poster's point that anything is possible if cost is not
considered but by "more expensive" I am talking about spending more than a
few hundred and less than a few thousand.
