Now that VHDL-2008 is getting a little traction, I've put together some
users guides for the various additions to the packages.

They are at:
http://www.vhdl.org/fphdl

Please take a look and tell me what you think.

I've made VHDL-93 compatible versions of all of these packages, so that
you can run them with most tools.

I peeked at the fixed-point user guide and it looks great.
You have good, clear examples, and intelligible explanations
of the rationale behind various key design decisions.

For newbies to fixed-point, either a few diagrams or some
references to tutorial material might be helpful. I have some
stuff that may be useful as a starting point; let me know
if you want it.

One major point, though: The Gotcha! about direct assignment
of one fixed-point vector to another should be written in
at least 48-point, blood-red, text. This is a deeply, deeply
scary feature of VHDL whenever one uses a "smart" package
such as your fixed-point stuff: simple assignment is
broken. That's why I've moaned, on several occasions,
about the inability to overload := in VHDL.

Otherwise, it only remains to thank you for the heroic effort
that went into developing and testing these packages. Having
made a partial implementation of the same thing myself in the
past, I'm very aware of the huge amount of work required to do
a good job on it. I hope it gets the appreciation it deserves.
