VCR tracking adjustment question

I got this 10 year old Quasar player in with a slight tracking
problem. I Cleaned the unit, resurfaced the capstan roller, and it has
good torque, brake etc. By moving the tape slightly with my finger
just to the left of the audio head I can almost correct the error but
here's the thing; tracking is adjusted from the remote. So not knowing
where "center" is on a potentiometer type tracking adjustment how do I
know where to center the tracking electrically before I attempt any
mechanical adjustments? Thanks very much for any advice. Lenny Stein,

Good chance the tracking adjustment is digital-only, and requires a special
"for adjustment" IR remote control. Ten years ago the industry was still in
the process of converting to all-digital setup/adjustments, so there may be a
"manual" procedure. You'll have to find service data for the specific model
you have, or for a matching Panasonic, etc. Quasar is a Matshushita brand
(Panasonic, etc.).

lenny:
If the mechanical positioning of the A/C head looks undisturbed and the
remote control tracking adjustment doesn't quite make it...... leaving a
perturbation at the bottom or top of the picture when playing your alignment
tape..... then I might suspect the exit or entrance roller guide height
could be slightly off......
Get your scope probe on the head preamp and look at the RF envelope and
adjust for symmetry, flatness and max RF.
