Who made the VCR and what model?

All VCRs perform the same function, but they go about this function in
countless different ways.

Try unplugging the VCR and leaving it unplugged overnight. Your problem may be
that the SYSCON may need to be reset. - Reinhart

Switchmode power supply. Look for bad electorlytic caps or simply replace
all on the primary side of the supply.

Panasonic VCR is the only make that has comes into the workshop after a
power failure
(or a power outage)

OR too put it another way, when people bring in their VCR for a head clean,
Panasonic VCR is the only make were the VCR is dead on arrival to the
workshop.

If not, more than likely, the power supply was damaged and will need to
be repaired.

Most older Panasonic VCRs will require capacitors replaced in the power
supply. It's a simple, if somewhat tedious repair but will restore
full operation.

Eric.....
Oh, come on now........
......I think I have seen "one or two" other brands with power supply
problems and DOA symptoms. Haven't you ever had in your shop the almost as
famous SMPS failures with JVC, Samsung, Toshiba, Sony to name a few......
and some of the linear power supplies from Emerson, Goldstar and Hitachi
were certainly a source of these symptoms too.

It's not only Panasonic with that problem, here in Holland we have the same
problems with Philips, Samsung, Grundig, Blaupunkt and many more. But always
models with a switching powersupply.

the fuse to the power cord was damaged; i replaced it. however, the
vcr is still dead.

i cannot do any more than that on my own. is this an expensive job,
replacing the capacitors, if I take it to a repair shop?

How did the fuse blow?
Was it black inside of the glass or silver?
Was it clear, so you could see the wire?

It might be the fuse went from metal fatigue, now you have replaced the fuse
the supply will not work because some of the electrolytics in the primary
side of the power supply have got a high E.S.R
lets us know the values of electrolytics on the primary side of the power
supply

If it is bad caps, it is a straightforward job and as such the cost
shold be reasonable. Whether that makes it worth doing when you
can buy a new garbage VCR for $49 is another story. Older Panasonic
VCRs are decent machines that can be kept going forever though.

don't know how to obtain the values of electrolytics. i am a real
layperson.

the glass was clear with very light smudging, so i could see the
broken filament. i think that the fluctuating power (mostly
insufficient power) during a recent brownout damaged it.

Take it to a reputable repair shop. It's probably a straightforward
repair.

If you don't know how to do fine soldering, you can't repair it yourself.

Just throw the power supply in the bin and buy a new VCR.

Workshop have enough problems, (it's all a pain in the neck and you don't
get any thanks from modern customers) today without stuffing around with
VCR's some stupid person has stuffed around with.

And you consider this a useful reply to a request for assistance?

No one's touched the power supply. He's asking what to do. Your reply
would be more appropriate on alt.fillup.landfill. :)
