VCR contrast streaks

My old VCR has started showing noisy streaks
trailing behind high-contrast edges. They don't
appear to be affected by head cleaning (unlike
the more usual random image streaks, which
are not the problem here).

Anyone know what causes this?

With VCRs so cheap these days, I know that
any major repair effort won't really be worth my time.
But I'd go to a modest amount of trouble simply
to keep it out of the landfill.

And if I do end up getting a new one, does
anyone know how to tell in advance which
models will allow a decent image while
fast-forwarding? This was touted as an advantage
of 4-head models when they first came out,
but in my experience there was no correlation:
some 4-head models were worse than 2-head!

Thanks!

JVC HR-S7500U series. Solid image at 2,3,5,7x with sound, even in reverse.

Save the landfill, save your pocketbook, and save your sanity. Use it as a
rewind machine.
