They don't do it that way.

There are chips which implement the entire charging cycle.

Personally, I'm going to wait a few months, until
the postmortem results come out. I've seen no information
to date, which makes any indication of a root cause.

I knew it's impossible to use a chip to prevent abuse. But shouldn't we
make that point clear to consumers?

Should we add "proper handling of rechargeable battery" to primary
schools if not nursery schools textbooks? :)

It's practically same as downloading RAM.

Well, could cast protection magic using computer programs? I doubt it... ;)

Is your boss smart? :)

Anyway... maybe all these rechargeable batteries stories is to insert a
dangerous device to all civilians so that they can be tracked and killed
more easily. The VR goggles are also part of the grand King Herod plan.

Do you need a prescription for the stuff you're on, or can it be
purchased over the counter or down the back alley?

It can be and has been in the past.

particularly at the very beginning of the sw development....

Who's on first?

Are you telling me you haven't solved the chicken - egg problem, yet?

Hey, Battery-Man, you'll be pleased to note
they're truncating the charge cycle to 60%.
This is to enhance safety for those people
too stupid to participate in the recall effort.
(You know, the same people here who drive their
cars forever, on the spare wheel they found in
the trunk of their car. Those people.)

http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/samsung-galaxy-note-7-recharge-1.3759648

That means, they'll be avoiding Stage 2 completely.
And checking the fill state (somehow) to determine
when to stop. You cannot use time alone to do
that (like stop at 45 minutes), because if the
battery is at 40%, and the target is to charge
to 60%, they need to use the "fuel gauge" to
tell when to stop.

I have no idea how they're doing that, whether
the battery management chip is programmable, or
the poor CPU will have to be on for the entire
charging process. And return to the run-state,
if the charger enters Stage 4 and tries to top up
the battery later.
