Using lead-free solder

I am planning to use lead-free solder. Are there any problems that people
have encountered using lead-free solder? Will a 60W soldering iron provide
enough heat to melt it?

Any advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Charles,

I do warranty repair work for Kenwood who now insist on lead free
solder for their products.

Requires more temp on the pcb pads which can be a bit risky sometimes,
Existing 60W will be ok with temp wound up (you will go through more
tips though), Careful attention to clean surface preparation for each
joint will be required (Just like back in tech again).

A good joint wont be clear and shiny like it is the lead - expect them
to look dull but be physically well formed.

I'll continue to use lead for all work other than warranty work which
expressly requires Lead Free Solder.

Wattage don't enter into it. It's the temperature. There are a number of

(largely incompatible) types of lead free solder. All of them (AFAIK)
require a higher *temperature* than standard tin-lead solder. So you'll
need to either turn the temp up to what's required for the particular lead
free alloy you're using (or change to a hotter tip if you're using, say an
old Weller TCPN iron). Also be sure that the components you're using are
rated to the higher temperature. Could be a bit embarrassing if the
internal wires on a component desolder themselves as you're soldering the
thing onto to a board.

Don't forget we are a lot safer now that we don't have leaded fuel, we
replaced it with higher Dioxin level petrol. At least when more people get
solid body cancers the "do-gooders" can be happy they save the thousands of
people from getting lead poisoning before, oh hang on, I can't remember of
an epidemic of lead poisoning, oh well.........

beside petrol stations - 7x ~ 15x, pretty staggering numbers.

I once went to a health & safety meeting, which the *entire* company was
forced to attend. A roll was taken, and we each had to signb a document
stating we had been warned of the hazard, and promised not to do it. The
hazard? chewing eutectic solder.... the production manager suggested
people should chew cable ties, they are a lot less toxic...

I remember reading somewhere that the whole lead-free thing in Europe is
an overreaction in the case of electronics. Apparently the lead
contributed from electronics is only about 10% in landfill. The EU
bureaucrats are having a whale of a time though. They are huge
benefactors of any regulation, like Sir Humphrey.

are not part of solder. - - off topic.

lead is not just found your blood but stored in other body tissues
including the brain, where the function is impaired.

btw. LRP pumps can be found at most petrol stations.

and if you want some free DU go to the visitors centre at lucas hieghts
reactor -sydney, and chew on the sample they let you play with

environment.

heard) and of course that damages the brain. Leaded paint
was banned about 30 years ago. My father said that, when
he built our house, he specifically looked for and selected
