I was digging around in my "old parts bin" (sic. "junk bin") and came across
an old 5-disc, roulette wheel style CD-player. I took it apart. Its actually
very well designed internally. There is a motor and large gear abou 10'
across that spins the turntable which holds up to 5 CDs. There is a motor
that controls the position of the optical head and along with gears and so
on is part of *optical/laser assembly itself.*
From what I know, a CD player's optical assembly is highly precise. This
one's range of motion appears is one dimension and looks to be about ~4" (or
whatever is less than the total radius of a standard CD). For what might one
use one of these things? I could imagine it being utilized for etching or
"microscopic analysis" of a small area higher power laser be fitted or
should a high-power lense system replace the laser itself. The assembly is
actually very modular. Take away the laser transceiver and voila you could
mount whatever the optical assembly could carry without burning out the
motor. Seems its useful only for printing in the small, etching, lettering,
plotting or embroidery?
What else--apart from reading CD's might such an assembly be used for? Just
seems rather neat-o.
